It’s got to be a rough day for Ron Chapman, the health care attorney who was hired by the Manatee Gun and Archery Club to conduct an audit, but who now appears to be the de facto club manager.
The Manatee County Sheriff’s Office has closed their “investigation” into criminal allegations Chapman that raised about Gene Pitts, the club’s 
longtime manager — namely that Gene stole guns and money.
Detectives concluded that Chapman’s allegations were unfounded. “There were no criminal elements discovered for his investigation of the missing firearms,” detectives wrote.
In other words — my words — they determined Chapman was full of s– –t.
As soon as he was hired for the audit, Chapman stirred up a pot-full of anti-Gene Pitts hysteria by claiming there were stolen guns and missing cash from the gun club that Gene has served faithfully for 40 years.
Of course he never actually called out Gene by name as the bad guy who took the guns and funds, but his comments left no doubt that he believed Gene was responsible.
He even went so far as to say Pitts needs to be “punished,” and that he cannot be part of the club.
One day after Chapman and a couple board members brought their “allegations” to the sheriff”s detectives, they issued a press release and told reporters how the detectives were “investigating” the missing guns.
James Judge, the club’s newly-hired $3,500-a-month PR consultant, told anyone with a news camera rolling that “The last thing in the world we want to happen is for these guns to get in the wrong hands and something bad to happen.”
Justice for Gene could be coming next month, when the club is scheduled to hold its next annual elections. I’m told the current board members will likely be replaced because of the shoddy way they’ve treated Gene, and Chapman and Judge will both likely be removed too.
